Brainspotting is a therapeutic approach designed to help individuals process and release emotional pain, trauma, and unprocessed memories that may be stored deep within the brain. It operates on the principle that where you look can affect how you feel—specifically, that your eyes can access deeper parts of your brain, where unresolved emotions are often stored.
The term "Brainspot" refers to specific spots in your visual field that, when focused on, can help you unlock intense emotional responses or memories. These “brainspots” are believed to correspond to the emotional, psychological, or physical issues that you may be struggling with. By guiding clients to focus on these spots, Brainspotting helps facilitate a deeper connection to your emotions, allowing you to process them in a safe, controlled environment.
Brainspotting is based on the idea that our bodies and minds store trauma and unresolved experiences in the brain, sometimes outside of our conscious awareness. These experiences can lead to persistent emotional distress, such as anxiety, depression, or flashbacks, and they often manifest physically as well.
The therapy itself is relatively simple and involves a combination of:
1. Eye Positioning: You are asked to focus on a specific point or "spot" in your visual field while also tuning into the emotions or memories associated with it.
2. Bilateral Stimulation: Often, Brainspotting also incorporates a form of bilateral stimulation, which can involve listening to soothing sounds or experiencing gentle tapping or movements. This stimulation helps activate both sides of the brain, facilitating the processing of emotional material.
3. Attunement: As your therapist, I’ll provide a calm and supportive environment while being attuned to your emotional and physical responses. I may adjust the focus or techniques depending on your reactions, ensuring the process feels comfortable and safe.
As you engage with the Brainspot, you might notice physical sensations, memories, or emotions rising to the surface. These sensations could include tightness in your body, shifts in your breathing, or flashes of memory. Over time, this process helps release unresolved emotions, allowing for healing and a greater sense of emotional balance.
Brainspotting draws on principles from neuroscience, especially around the idea of the “subcortical brain”, which governs our instinctive responses and emotions. When a person is in a traumatic or stressful situation, the brain may "freeze" these experiences in a part of the brain that is not easily accessible to our conscious minds. By targeting specific points in the visual field, Brainspotting helps access these deeper brain regions, where trauma is stored, allowing for the release of emotional and physiological blocks.
The approach also integrates neuroplasticity, which is the brain’s ability to change and adapt over time. Brainspotting aims to rewire neural pathways, allowing the brain to release outdated or harmful patterns and create healthier, more adaptive responses to stress and trauma.
Most therapies target the prefrontal cortex part of the brain or the "thinking part", which is why someone can know something but not feel it. "I know I'm capable, but I feel so incompetent sometimes". Usually, when there is this disconnect between knowing something and feeling something, there might be a need for a therapy that targets a different part of the brain.
Brainspotting has been found to be effective for a wide variety of emotional, psychological, and physical challenges, including:
- Trauma and PTSD: Whether from childhood abuse, accidents, or recent distressing events, Brainspotting can help process and release trauma-related emotions.
- Anxiety and Panic: By working with the underlying emotional triggers, Brainspotting can reduce anxiety and help you feel more grounded.
- Depression: For some, depression can be rooted in unresolved emotions or past experiences. Brainspotting can help uncover and heal these underlying causes.
- Performance Anxiety: Athletes, performers, and professionals may use Brainspotting to overcome performance blocks and increase confidence and success.
- Chronic Pain: Unresolved emotional trauma can sometimes manifest as physical pain. Brainspotting has been used to address chronic pain by working through the emotional components.

If you decide to try Brainspotting, here's what you can expect in a typical session:
1. Preparation: We’ll start by discussing your goals for therapy and any emotional or physical issues you’re currently experiencing. We may also take some time to explore your history and any trauma you’d like to address.
2. Identifying the Brainspot: Once you’re comfortable and ready, I will guide you to focus on specific points in your visual field. These spots are chosen based on your emotional responses to various topics or sensations. I use a pointer to help find the spot with you.
3. Processing: As you focus on the Brainspot, you may experience different emotions, memories, or sensations. You are encouraged to stay with whatever comes up, while I offer support and guidance throughout the process. The session may include periods of silence as you process these emotions.
4. Closure: At the end of the session, we will take time to reflect on the experience, discuss any insights or shifts, and ensure you feel grounded and safe before leaving.
A therapy intensive offers a prolonged amount of processing time, more than the standard 50-minute session covered by most insurances. Some issues or trauma are better served with a longer time to process, especially relational hurts or trauma. Sometimes it can be multiple hours in one day or multiple days in a row. The benefits of an intensive can be:
· a faster reduction in symptoms
· possibly a more cost-effective alternative to one hour a week talk therapy that may take longer and cost more over the course of treatment
· many folks report a decrease in treatment time
· may be more convenient to schedule one day or week devoted to therapy than one hour a week for several months or years
· targeted processing to address specific goals (e.g. Decrease negative core beliefs like I’m not good enough from daily to 2 days/week)'
Most insurances, unfortunately, do not cover intensives. You may be able to get partial coverage, depending on your out of network benefits for the first hour.
Intake:
Prior to engaging in an intensive, a 60-minute intake will be conducted prior to the intensive day to better understand your needs and goals before starting Brainspotting, to ensure that there are coping strategies and supports to help you outside of an intensive if needed, and target the issue you would like to work on transforming. We will:
1. Assess for your targeted needs and intensity of your symptoms
2. Explore any negative core beliefs that may impact you
3. Create a timeline of trauma or issues that may be impacting your mental health
4. Identify anything that can help you with processing, like loving relationships, pets, places in nature, and activities that help you feel empowered/safe/calm/etc.
For Each Day of the Brainspotting Intensive:
There will be a brief check-in, review of coping skills, client rights during processing, and then 10-15 minute review of targeted issue to increase emotional activation and limbic engagement (basically, have the issue taking up awareness in your body). There will then be 75 minutes of Brainspotting (for 3-hour intensives) or 120 minutes (for 5-hour intensives) with an offered break followed by 75 minutes of Brainspotting or 150 minutes (for 5-hour intensives) with a 10-15 minute debrief and review of coping at the end of the intensive day. If more breaks are needed, you can always ask or add break points with your therapist.
